Terms we have embraced such as Galaxy, Big Bang, supernovae, black holes, and many others reveal the deep influence of Astronomy in our everyday life in so many ways, especially in our language, music, and art. According to NASA, a black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light cannot get out. Thus, because light is the reflection of a pigmented surface as perceived by the eye, but because there is no light, it cannot be seen. This series of hand-built ceramic slab sculptures, using a white matt glaze exterior with incised black lines and a flat blace underglaze interior serve to encapsulate the invisible “nothingness” of a black hole.
